Tasman Glacier Heli Hike: Ice Walks and Queenstown Access

A Tasman Glacier heli hike combines helicopter access and guided ice walking. The two packages here reach Mount Cook from Queenstown by bus or plane.

A Tasman Glacier heli hike from Queenstown

A Tasman Glacier heli hike starts with a distinction between getting to Mount Cook and getting onto the ice. The packages here include Queenstown access in two forms: a guided bus journey or return plane flights. Both then include the helicopter connection and a guided glacier walk with specialist equipment. Their six-hour and twelve-hour durations describe the complete packages, rather than continuous time hiking.

For travellers already near the glacier, the airport-based tour comparison is the more direct starting point. For a Queenstown departure, decide whether a road journey or the additional flying suits the day. Hotel pickup belongs to the selected option on the plane package; the bus package includes pickup with the precise Queenstown location arranged for that booking.

The bus day and the flying package

The twelve-hour bus package includes a guided bus tour from Queenstown, scenic helicopter flight with glacier landing and a two-hour glacier hike. Glacier boots and crampons or snowshoes are supplied, with a waterproof jacket if required. Bottled water and snacks are included. Bring a light lunch or use the meal stop described for the day; lunch is a separate expense.

The six-hour flying package includes return plane travel between Queenstown and Mount Cook with pilot commentary, the helicopter legs between Mount Cook Airport and Tasman Glacier, and a two-hour glacier hiking experience. All specialist equipment is included. Food and drinks are separate, and hotel pickup and drop-off apply only when that option is selected.

For the flying package, check in 30 minutes beforehand at the office in Remarkables Park Town Centre, Frankton, at the Hawthorne Drive corner near the airport. This is a specific meeting arrangement, rather than a promise of collection from any airport arrival. Keep the booking instructions available offline and organise the connection to that office in advance.

From check-in to the return flight

Think of the glacier part as a sequence: check-in and instructions, helicopter access, equipment and guided walking, then the return helicopter journey. Follow the team's direction on fitting and using the specialist equipment. The guide chooses the walking route to suit the ice and conditions, so the walk is an experience of a changing glacier rather than a fixed marked trail.

For the bus package, the road travel is part of the same long outing. For the plane package, the Queenstown flights are additional stages around the Mount Cook helicopter activity. Keep the whole sequence in mind when arranging breakfast, lunch and onward plans. A short scenic flight with a landing has a different structure; compare flight-only experiences if the guided walking element is not your priority.

Starting at Mount Cook Airport

Mount Cook Airport is the local helicopter departure point, distinct from the Tasman Valley car park. Travellers staying nearby can compare the locally starting heli-hikes without adding Queenstown transport. The standard operator heli-hike described separately takes 3.5 hours, with up to two hours on the ice, and costs 995 NZD per person from 1 October 2026.

That standard product requires moderate fitness and independent walking over uneven ground and stairs; mountaineering experience is unnecessary. Its minimum age is ten, with minors accompanied by a parent or guardian aged at least eighteen. It has a minimum of four participants and a guide ratio of one to twelve. These are conditions of that standard product, rather than universal age or group rules for the two Queenstown packages.

Changing ice, caves and guide decisions

Glacier walking combines a walking experience with helicopter access and an adventurous setting. Changing ice is central to the visit, but an ice cave is not a permanent stop or an assured inclusion. Let the guide determine the route and suitable features on the day. For independent land walking, use the public viewpoint routes; these do not lead onto the glacier.

Leave a weather buffer in the itinerary and follow departure updates. Flights and landings depend on conditions, and DOC warns that avalanches can occur in any season. Consult MetService, DOC and the Avalanche Advisory for planning. The visit timing guide helps organise alternatives without promising a particular month's flight weather. Experience the ice and glacier lake with a guide, keep out of the water and stay off icebergs.

Heli-hike questions

Is the twelve-hour trip twelve hours on the glacier?

It is the complete bus-based day from Queenstown. The included glacier hike lasts two hours.

Do I need my own crampons?

Specialist equipment is supplied in both selected packages. The bus package lists glacier boots and crampons or snowshoes, with a waterproof jacket if required.

Will the guide take us into an ice cave?

The route follows suitable glacier conditions. Treat caves and other ice features as changing possibilities, rather than a fixed destination in the package.
